Ismét egy "elfeledett kuriózum az amerikai szerzői film fénykorából". Peter Bogdanovich Olaszországban forgatott filmje intelligens és mesterien kimunkált irodalmi adaptáció, ha haloványabb is olyan remekműveknél, mint Ettore Scola Szerelmi szenvedélye (1981) - egyike azon szükségképpen sikertelenségre ítélt filmeknek (New York, New York; A mennyország kapuja), amik miatt néhány év után a stúdiók kivették az irányítást a feltörekvő fiatal művészek kezéből. Nem nehéz megtippelni, miért nem lett a Daisy Miller közmondásos siker: egyszerre kesernyés és szellemes tragikomédia, stílusában elegáns és konzervatív, nem annyira a cselekmény gördülékenységére, mint a színészi játékra és az atmoszférára alapoz. Bogdanovich végre erős főszerepet adhatott fölfdezettjének, Cybill Shepherdnek.

"Peter Bogdanovich's Daisy Miller is an odd mix of two tones that the director usually hits with skillful precision: comedy and bittersweet loss. Based on Henry James's novella of the same name, the film tells the story of an expatriate named Winterbourne who meets a beguiling young American girl traveling Europe with her flighty mother and surly younger brother. A relationship develops between the uptight Winterbourne and the vivacious Daisy, but Daisy quickly becomes the scandal of the American expatriate community and Winterbourne can't quite reconcile himself to the disapproval of people like the rich widow Mrs. Walker.
Henry James is notoriously hard to adapt to the screen because so much of his work takes place below the placid surface of the (in)action of the plot. Bogdanovich bravely waded into these deep waters with his mind set on staying true to the spirit of James. The result is in many ways his least accessible film. It reminds me in some ways of Welles's The Immortal Story, a film of similar somber control. The difference here is that Bogdanovich, a master of comedy, injects this film with a lot of daylight, in both the metaphorical and literal senses."

"(...) Winterbourne fights his attraction to her during life and so Daisy’s song becomes an elegy for a life together between them that was never to be. During the cast reprise at the end of the film, an orchestrated rendition of the song is heard. Bogdanovich himself chose the song (it isn’t named in Henry James’ novella), which was written in 1866.
No director in contemporary American film makes fuller use of what might be called “subjective cinema” as Peter Bogdanovich. In the international realm, only Roman Polanski is his peer. Everyone has their reasons in Bogdanovich’s universe and we see those reasons clearly because he shows us the world from “everyone’s” perspective. His spaces always appear as if in flux, jumping as he does from one character’s perspective to another from scene to scene, and sometimes within scenes."
